Western Canada Music Award

Western Canada is home to an amazing range of barn styles. Settlers from all over the world brought their unique methods of barn-building with them, creating a picturesque legacy of farm architecture. The construction of these buildings is intertwined with the settlement of the west and with the memories of those who live in or visit the area. Bob Hainstock collected photographs and stories of western barns for many years while working as a photographer for the Manitoba Co-operator. His two year feature series on barns drew a tremendous response from readers and barn enthusiasts. This book was the result. Over 150 color and black & white photographs combine with detailed information on the history, construction, and significance of barns in the western landscape to form a book as beautiful as it is engaging.

A singing cowboy himself, author Douglas B. Green (better known as Ranger Doug from the Grammy-award-winning group Riders In The Sky) is uniquely suited to write the story of the singing cowboy. He has been collecting information and interviews on western music, films, and performers for nearly thirty years. In this volume, he traces this history from the early days of vaudeville and radio, through the heyday of movie westerns before World War II, to the current revival. He provides rich and careful analysis of the studio system that made men such as Gene Autry and Roy Rogers famous, and he documents the role that country music and regional television stations played in carrying on the singing cowboy tradition after World War II.

Mexican music, especially in the American Southwest, also somewhat influenced its development.
